KY Protocol Components

Home-Based Kundalini Yoga for Hypertension: Pilot 3-Arm Study DESIGN: 3-arm pilot study: (1) yoga class with instructor (n=28), (2) yoga at home (n=28), (3) control (n=27). POPULATION: N=83 patients with hypertension (BP 120-179/≤109 mmHg), 92% on antihypertensive medication. SETTING: Primary health care center, southern Sweden. DURATION: 12 weeks. MATCHING: Groups matched at group level for systolic blood pressure. YOGA AT HOME GROUP: Short home-based Kundalini yoga program. YOGA CLASS GROUP: Instructor-led group sessions. RESULTS: Yoga class group showed no BP improvement. Yoga at home group showed diastolic BP decline of 4.4 mmHg (p<0.05) vs. control. NOTE: Specific yoga exercises not detailed in this paper. The finding that home practice outperformed instructor-led class was unexpected. Medication unchanged during study.
